Seeing how many visitors your wiki has had (and where they come from!) is a great reinforcer for students, as they have visual proof that people other than their teacher are accessing their work. In order to track your visitors, you'll need to create a free account at StatCounter.com. Go there, create your free account, then come back here and follow these directions.
At StatCounter:
Go to My Projects, then click Add New Project.
Fill in website details (Leave the box for IP addresses blank if you don't know yours) & click Next
Click "Configure & Install Code"
Pick the kind of counter you want (I recommend the first option, "Visible Counter")
Pick whether you want to track unique visits or each time a user clicks on a new page in your wiki (I use Unique Visits only, but it's your choice)
Pick whether you want an image or a plain text counter to appear on your site.
Pick your options for the format of your counter, then hit Next.
For, "Please choose the Blog/Web Editor you use", select "Default Installation Guide". Leave the other two checkboxes unchecked and click Next.
Highlight all the text in the box marked Your Statcounter Code and copy it to your clipboard or to Notepad.
Go to your wiki and decide where you want the counter to show up (I always put mine in the sidebar menu, but some people like it on the front page. Doesn't matter where you put it).
At Your Wiki:
Click Edit to open the editor (or Edit Navigation if you're putting it in the sidebar)
Put the cursor where you want the counter to appear and click on the little TV icon in the Editor bar ("Embed Widget").
Click on Other HTML in the left hand menu.
Paste the StatCounter code you previously copied into that white box and hit Save.
You will now see a code on your page that will says something like
Click Save and your counter should appear where you placed it.
Now, not only will you have a counter on your site, but when you log into your Statcounter site, you can go to "My Projects" and see traffic stats for your site - where people are coming from, how many times they've visited, etc. You can also view your visitors in a map view.
